Intercultural Communication in the Business Context

f I created a book for effective communication for intercultural business negotiation. Intercultural communication in the business context is relative because of globalization; it has made the market available to many people as well as created a climate where business executives from all over the world are meeting face-to-face to establish joint ventures and negotiate contracts. It has also led to many countries being interdependent on the economy of the world as a whole, so effective communication in the business setting is very necessary as we have a more global economy. Business negotiators from different cultures may have different standards for business etiquettes. For example, the Chinese do not enjoy big gatherings on business meetings they just enjoy formally being welcomed which are different from western societies. Diversity among business cultures can frequently lead to confusion, misunderstandings, and failures in cross-cultural commercial endeavors. In the business secto r culture determines such dynamics as protocol, management, leadership, decision-making processes, and negotiation and conflict management. Business protocol involves forms of ceremony, etiquette, dress, and appropriate codes of conduct, and it is important to understand and follow the prevailing customs when conducting business in another culture. Hurricane Katrina: Two Disasters From the Frontline Film, The Old Man and The Storm, the life of Herbert Gettridge was followed after he returned to the 9th Ward of New Orleans to rebuild his home after it was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. After Hurricane Katrina, 500,000 families were displaced, 200,000 homes were destroyed, and 600 congregations were demolished (The Old Man and The Storm). This was a natural disaster of monumental proportions. Ironically though, a mock scenario was created by Louisiana State University’s Center for the Study of Public Health: Impacts of Hurricanes and FEMA, called Hurricane Pam in July of 2004. An artificial disaster was created during a ten day exercise held at the State Emergency†¦show more content†¦The lack of response by the various governmental agencies turned this natural disaster into a blame game that still exists almost five years later. The unpreparedness of governmental agencies on the local, state a nd federal levels was inexcusable because of the mock disaster of Hurricane Pam that had just been performed a year earlier in 2004. After the hurricane there was an inadequate or unnatural response from all levels of government. The agencies like the Red Cross, Congregations from many neighboring states, and the Army Reserve were quick to respond to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. By the end of the 2005 – 2006 hurricane season the Army Reserve had saved hundreds of storm victims, flown 665 hours in 38 days, transported more than 2,000 urban search and rescue team members, and placed more than 10.4 million pounds of reconstruction materials in breached levees (Lambert). It seemed to be taking other governmental agencies longer to respond. Local government was doing what they could but a political battle was brewing between New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Kathleen Blanco. THE DEATH PENALTY Many nations have criminals to punish, but what’s changing is how they punish their criminals. Most countries, even some states, have come to the realization that the death penalty is an unfair, inhumane, unconstitutional, and irreversible punishment that’s much too severe and is an unfit punishment for a fair and just society. Internationally, the U.S. ranks fifth in terms of the number of prisoners put to death, putting America in such ill-esteemed company as the regimes of China, Iran, North Korea, and Yemen. Not only is the death penalty wrong, but also it’s unfair to. Each state has their own laws when it comes to the death penalty, some states don’t even have the death penalty as an option anymore. If we’re going to have a death penalty it should be a national law and have national requirements for such a punishment, instead of individual state laws that differ in each state. So, what happens to a criminal who commits a murder in a state that doesn’t have the death penalty? Absolutely nothing, I mean he or she will go to prison for a long time, maybe even for life, but they won’t, they can’t get the death penalty. But if the criminal did the crime just a state over he or she might be facing a lethal injection for their crime. Even a worm can see the unfairness in that. Essentially, organizations usually deploy skilled based pay or competency-based pay. Basically, a skilled based pay refers to employee compensation system whereby workers are rewarded with additional pay in exchange of their skills, competencies, or expertise. It is an acquired and observable skill and expertise that an individual has to be able to perform a particular task. I learnt that in the skill-based systems, workers will be eligible for additional pay after showing their skills, knowledge, and the competencies, which will be rewarded by the system (Boyett Boyett 2004, p. 4). However, it should be noted that it is not the only approach that is available to compensate workers, but the best approach to promote organizational learning. Therefore, skill based pay differs from other employee pay systems, because it focuses on the skills and differences in a system of rates of pay, especially for all categories of workers. A such, it is person based pay which rewards a person on merit, and the pay progression is directly linked to individual skills and competencies. I leant that to design a skilled based pay, the system should be underpinned for various opportunities that are available to employees for training, which is very important for an organization. Thus, when introducing a skilled based pay, there are several steps that must be followed with several issues to be addressed (Canavan 2008, p. 22). The most important step is to ensure that the skills requirement is available. In addition, resources must also be available for the system to succeed. Further, individual jobs should be categorized in families on the basis of the similarity in the skills needs. In addition, the skills in each family should be able to perform the jobs that should be analyzed. Further, a process should be developed to describe, certify, and value the skills, and price them. The process should be assessed, accredited, and eventually reward workers for their skills. The other fundamental aspect I learnt is what consider when designing a skill based pay system is its implementation. As a matter of fact, women participation in the seniormanagement positions may have a downside, because they tend to be less effective or simply dislike the competitive environments, such as those that are most likely found in the executive suite of many organizations. Some researchers also believe that diversity may also contribute to the diversity of opinion as a result of political or social pressure (Barney 2006, p. 100). In my view, in a competitive and efficient labor market environment, it is important to ensure that the right individuals always get the right position, which suggests that the participation of women in executive jobs would not have any observable effect. As such, this has been attributed to the gender pay gap, which is usually caused by various factors. For instance, in most organizations, mentoring is considered to more critical for the female progressions compared especially in terms of building leadership and self confidence (Barney Edward 2005, p. 4). I support the view that women also still require to move more often to obtain promotion status but should have to wait for some considerable duration in order to be promoted. Therefore, in order to deal with the gender gap, it is necessary to focus on gender pay equity, which is a situation where both men and women receive equal pay based on their work.
