Comparing Economies Free Essays
To see how well a country has developed, people mainly judge by the total GDP value, there are also many type of indicator, such as the HDI, number of mobile per person etc. In this essay I have mentioned 3 countries- Kenya, Hong Kong and UK, to see how they have developed in the past 10years and what is the problem that hinder its improvement. Kenya is a tropical country which lies on the equator. We will write a custom essay sample on Comparing Economies or any similar topic only for you Order Now Agriculture and tourism are two of the most flourish industries, they bring the country with the major part of income. 5% of the Kenya population made their living by taking part in the primary production, but their income can merely support the cost of living of the whole family. In 2008, total nominal GDP was $30. 2 billion and $857 for GDP per capita. With exchange rate considered, the total GDP in Purchasing Power Parity was $60. 4 billion. Human Development Index of Kenya in the year of 2006 was only 0. 491, which stated an extremely low civilised level in this country, people could not receive proper education and the life expectancy were comparatively low.Unemployment rate reached 40% in 2009; the main cause is the increasing population. Economic reform and liberalization began to carry out in the early 90s. Kenya government undertook a series of economic measures with the assistance from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. However, in the 2000, the bad weather condition made the economy to slow down. Furthermore, as the government didnââ¬â¢t carry out action to meet the commitment, the IMF and World Bank refused to give financial support. The Kenya Economy was in a depression at that age.The situation was slightly improved in the next few years when the new president Kibaki took up the post. Various economic reforms were put into practice and had finally resumed the cooperation. In the recent years, Kenya government has been more ambitious. The annual growth rate keep on increasing from the 2005, they are now in a growth by encouraging agricultural production and more public and foreign investment. Kenya developed quite a lot in the past 10 years as the government began to made use of the natural resources and even further expand them.Besides, they started to sign partnership arrangement with other country to gain more trading opportunities, like the oil exploration contract with China in 2006 which was series of deals designed to keep Africaââ¬â¢s natural resources flowing out. Hong Kong is autonomous capitalist region of China, it is known as the Global Metropolitan and International Financial Centre. The composition of Hong Kong GDP is special, re-export contributed a lot to the figure by distributing the imported goods mainly from the China to the rest of the world. Nominal GDP of Hong Kong in 2008 was $223. 7 billion and $31,849. In terms of PPP, the figure was $293. billion and $44,413 respectively. Hong Kong managed to be one of the top 10 countries by GDP at PPP per capita. HK also ranked the 22nd in the year 2008 on the HDI table. It has an index of 0. 942 in 2006, which shows it did well on life expectancy, literacy, educational attainment and GDP per capita. All of these indicators show that people in Hong Kong enjoy a high living standard. Unemployment rate in the end of 2008 was only 3. 8% that was quite low when comparing with rest of the world. Most population in Hong Kong is employed in the tertiary production, like retails and tourism, thus largest part of the GDP.Primary and secondary productions only take up a tiny proportion, due to the limitation of resources and high running cost. Stock Exchange in Hong Kong is also world famous, because of the free market economy and low taxation system. The government adopted a passive attitude towards the industry; power is left to the market forces and the private sector. This policy attracts a huge inflow of foreign investment to the local market. From the late 90s onwards, with a rapidly growing Mainland China as its hinterland, the paramount location enables it to serve as a point of entry for investment flowing into the mainland. The China and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement signed on 2003 ensured favorable trade and investment co-operation for both sides and promote joint development; it helped to gain enterprises and investors faith in the local market. However, Hong Kongââ¬â¢s inflation rate is markedly varying in the past 10 years, the challenges of economic globalisation from China and the outbreak of SARS led to a deflation from ââ¬â¢99 to ââ¬â¢04. The situation was soon improved afterwards. The problem which hinders HK development is the lack of raw resources, so the volume of import is huge which lower the value of GDP and even held back the development of other aspects. The total output of HK is over-relied on th e tertiary production, especially the financial market. When there was once a financial crisis, the whole economy fall into a distress. United Kingdom is the sixth largest economy in the world and the third largest in Europe. Nominal GDP of this country in 2008 was $2. 7 trillion and $43,785 per capita; $2. 2 trillion and $36,523 respectively when expressed in PPP. Its HDI calculated in 2006 was 0. 42, which ranked just above Hong Kong; this additionally shows the high literacy rate and long expectancy. There was 7. 6% of the work force in UK was unemployed in July 2009. And a Gini coefficient of 36 shows the inequality of income and wealth, although more resources are held by the rich, the problem is not so serious. UK was a strong country ever since the Industrial Revolution started, yet it began to lose its competitiveness in the 20th century when other countries also develop. The role in the global economy of UK became more stable at the start of 21st century, due to the huge GDP and the influential power on finance of London.Services industry is now the major sector in UK, it makes up more than 70% of the GDP. Like Hong Kong, financial services and tourism are the dominant part of the whole country. The country capital- London is an international business centre, which also has the worldââ¬â¢s largest Stock Exchange transactions. After a recession, UK had achieved a growth in every year from the late 90s until the year 2007. The UK managed to maintain a strongest economy between all European countries, both on interest rate, inflation and unemployment. The boom is then ended because of the global financial crisis and the rising commodity prices as well, the UK economy was seriously harmed. Many companies and even banks failed and became nationalised, this also bought the country with a deficit in finished goods and commodities. The UK is still facing a hard time now, the GDP for 2009 is forecasted to decline by 3. 8%, the negative growth may continue until early 2010. The UK economy was already well developed, so the government should undertake fiscal policies to modify the market and improve the efficiency. How to cite Comparing Economies, Papers
Performance and Rewards Management Samples for Students â⬠MyAssignme
Question: Discuss about the Performance and Rewards Management. Answer: Summary of what was done As part of the weeks work, I learnt various issues based on determining the structure of a remuneration and performance system, with regards to person and job consideration. It also focuses on determining the structure of a remuneration and performance system, with regards to external considerations, including legislation. The reflection also explores the benefits, recognition schemes, as well as individual rewards. In my view, the areas identified forms that major part of performance and rewards systems in an organization. Basically, rewards systems comprise of systems such as monetary payments and working conditions that employees, seem to receive as part of their jobs. New Learning I learnt about the structure of remuneration and performance system that emphasize on person and job considerations. Essentially, organizations usually deploy skilled based pay or competency-based pay. Basically, a skilled based pay refers to employee compensation system whereby workers are rewarded with additional pay in exchange of their skills, competencies, or expertise. It is an acquired and observable skill and expertise that an individual has to be able to perform a particular task. I learnt that in the skill-based systems, workers will be eligible for additional pay after showing their skills, knowledge, and the competencies, which will be rewarded by the system (Boyett Boyett 2004, p. 4). Therefore, I agree with the view that designing a skill based pay cannot be achieved by imitating another system. However, much can be learned by exploring what has been achieved by other organizations and a better understanding of the variables and principles that are fundamental in the design of a skill based pay system. The main reason why organizations implement the skill based system is to promote learning. However, it should be noted that it is not the only approach that is available to compensate workers, but the best approach to promote organizational learning. Therefore, skill based pay differs from other employee pay systems, because it focuses on the skills and differences in a system of rates of pay, especially for all categories of workers. A such, it is person based pay which rewards a person on merit, and the pay progression is directly linked to individual skills and competencies. I leant that to design a skilled based pay, the system should be underpinned for various opportunities that are available to employees for training, which is very important for an organization. Thus, when introducing a skilled based pay, there are several steps that must be followed with several issues to be addressed (Canavan 2008, p. 22). The most important step is to ensure that the skills requirement is available. In addition, resources must also be available for the system to succeed. Further, individual jobs should be categorized in families on the basis of the similarity in the skills needs. In addition, the skills in each family should be able to perform the jobs that should be analyzed. Further, a process should be developed to describe, certify, and value the skills, and price them. The process should be assessed, accredited, and eventually reward workers for their skills. The other fundamental aspect I learnt is what consider when designing a skill based pay system is its implementation. Therefore, when designing a specific implementation plan, it is necessary to involve communication will all stakeholders and focus on the implementation plan. However, the main benefit of the system is that it increases the average hourly rates. On the other hand, the skilled based system results into lower labor costs. Therefore, it is very critical for businesses to consider adopting the skilled based system and whether better results will be more likely. The other approach that is used by organizations to reward employees is the competency based pay. Basically, firms prefer to use the competency based pay approach based on the skills, as well as experiences in the workplace (Adams 2010, p. 17. It is a structure that is deployed to motivate workers to get inspired, and develop on their skills and competencies and also to apply them, based on the job position or title (Homan 2009, p. 290). It is an important pay structure because the motivated get promotions from their current positions. However, it is necessary to note that the employees are not paid based on the virtue of the positions they hold in the organization, but rather because of their competency. Thus, a competency base structure can be developed for any organizational level, or a specific job role or function or for the entire organization. However, when an organization is going to reward workers for a particular competency, then it must have a measure of such employee comp etencies (Suff 2011, p. 2). Thus, there are several factors that have t be taken into consideration when an organization seeks to fully integrate a competency based pay. It is necessary to have employee performance appraisal process and manager should be trained and be ready to measure the competencies. In addition, the staff should be made aware of the requirements and show them, with regards to their performance appraisals. Notably, competency based systems are determined by performance indicators, and should be quantified through employee interviews or surveys. The system is beneficial because it enables employees to develop their skills on the basis of their experiences and competencies. However, the drawback is that the system is not easy to manage, especially the expectations of the employees. Personal Reflection This is an important area on employee rewards system is remuneration, governance, and the gender executive pay gap in organizations. Thus, the week five discussion focuses on the regulated remuneration cycle, key aspects of the regulatory framework. It also focused on the gender pay gap, relevant legislation to deal with pay inequity, as well as the key findings from the 2016 workplace gender equality agency. Basically, remuneration practice is the actual practice of companies and individual executives in relation to remuneration. It comprise of setting the organizational remuneration policy, writing the remuneration contract, execution of the contract, as well as the final termination of the contract. Basically, remuneration policies are very critical to the delivery of an organizations business strategy and to motivate and mobilize staff to achieve the valued organizational goals. Remuneration plays a fundamental role in increasing the demand for skilled labor. Further remuneration policies used by organizations, are perceived to have a sustained competitive advantage as it makes key employees to keep working in their workplaces, hence reducing employment costs (Amabile 2005, p. 128). I understood that a remuneration disclosure is conducted annually through a remuneration report together with adhoc disclosures that are related ro the remuneration such as company loans. On the other hand, engagement remuneration is that which occurs between the company and the shareholders in remuneration. On the other hand, voting on remuneration refers to the annual advisory vote on organizations remuneration report combined with all kinds of remuneration, as well as related resolutions (Altonji Rebecca 2014, p. 3147). However, with regards to all aspects of remuneration, it is a fundamental aspect, that is used to define employees standards of living. It involves the salaries, benefits, as well as other perks, that are used by organizations to govern the decisions that individuals make (Andrews George 2009, p. 500). In my view, remuneration is important to employees, since it is considered as one of the significant costs they face. Further, remunerations are a major considerat ion for employees to run an effective organization. I also learnt that the key aspects of the organizations remuneration framework. In essence, there are four activities that are involved in the remuneration cycle. These comprise of the remuneration practice, engagement, and voting (Barber Terrance 2008, p. 267). Apparently, it is necessary to understand that each of these activities is regulated to some extent. In addition, there are specific rules that are used in the regulation of the activities and to facilitate the rules. However, there are certain rules that are mandatory whereas others are considered to be voluntary with different consequences attached to them. In order to engage in the best organizational practices, there are certain regulations that govern corporations, which seeks to regulate key aspects of executive remuneration. As such, the main aim of the regulations is to provide disclosure to the executive compensation through listed firms, which form part of the financial reporting process (Barnard 2010, p. 14). In a ddition, it is also necessary to note that the legislation may also specify the duties of the executives, which may be owed to them in common law and equity. The other interesting part discussed during the course is leadership in the private sector (Ledford 2008). As a matter of fact, women represent a higher percentage of degree qualified workers. I understood that the current trends show that women represent a very small percentage of the MBA graduated. However, the number of female CEO;s in the private sector is relatively small. As a matter of fact, top women CEOs is an area that has received very little attention, because the areas has been understudied (Barney 2009, p. 1234). As a matter of fact, women participation in the seniormanagement positions may have a downside, because they tend to be less effective or simply dislike the competitive environments, such as those that are most likely found in the executive suite of many organizations. Some researchers also believe that diversity may also contribute to the diversity of opinion as a result of political or social pressure (Barney 2006, p. 100). In my view, in a competitive and efficient labor market environment, it is important to ensure that the right individuals always get the right position, which suggests that the participation of women in executive jobs would not have any observable effect. As such, this has been attributed to the gender pay gap, which is usually caused by various factors. For instance, in most organizations, mentoring is considered to more critical for the female progressions compared especially in terms of building leadership and self confidence (Barney Edward 2005, p. 4). I support the view that women also still require to move more often to obtain promotion status but should have to wait for some considerable duration in order to be promoted. Therefore, in order to deal with the gender gap, it is necessary to focus on gender pay equity, which is a situation where both men and women receive equal pay based on their work. In real terms, the gender pay equity ensure that men and women performing the same tasks are paid equally. In my view, employee benefits focused on understanding the requirements the requirements for a sound plan. In my view employee benefits is becoming more important for organizations, especially with regards to compensation. However, based on many sources reviewed, many organizations differ significantly in what they include in their definition or employee benefits (Rosenbloom 2005, p. 11). For instance, some of the definitions focus on legally required benefits whereas others are voluntary (Mannion, 2004, p. 6). Nonetheless, the variations in the definition do not provide an organization with the best way to define employee benefits. In the lecture discussion, I observed that the underlying nature of employee benefits comprise of employee retention, satisfaction, and wellbeing. In addition, it also focuses on diversitymanagement and legal compliance, as well as employee engagement or commitment (United States United States 2008, p. 12). In general terms, employee benefits comprise of the monetary rewards, which are not paid directly to the employees, but may also comprise of other non-financial rewards, such as having an office with good furnishings (Beam MacFadden 2001, p. 7). However, the right combinations of employee benefits can enable a company to achieve its strategic objectives. Action to be Taken As a result of the lessons leant, I will be able to use my knowledge provides to provide better employee rewards and compensation, covering remuneration and employee benefits. I believe that when organizations put in place the best mechanisms and implement the most sound pay, remuneration, as well as employee benefits, they will be satisfied and in the long run contribute to the success of the organization. Learning Style I found that the issues leant in the course and the theories on performance and rewardsmanagement are vital to business and will do my best to implement them at the work place. In addition, I wish that the topic of performance and rewardsmanagement should be discussed both in class at organizational meeting. In general, this is a very interesting topic. My Dream to Be A Hero free essay sample
Lets take a trip through time. Take yourself back to the year 2001 and envision yourself as a seven year old. Youve just started first grade and the teacher is trying to learn more about you. By asking questions about your dreams, do you want to be a doctor? A lawyer? A teacher? Would you have answered yes to any questions? I did not nor did I ever wish to answer those questions. Instead, my only dream was to be a hero. I did not care who I would save or how I would manage to do so, I just wanted to say that I was a hero to someone. Time leads to maturity. Our dreams could have been set in stone one year only for that stone to be shattered the next. Moving on we find a new stone to carve our new dream into. Eventually surrounding us is an endless quarry of lost dreams. We will write a custom essay sample on My Dream to Be A Hero or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Soon, Im surrounded by a small quarry of my lost hopes, dreams, and thoughts. Out of boredom and nostalgia, I sift through the piles of debris to come across something I once cherished. Standing out from the rest of the stones is one of an odd color: a large polished rock with the inscription, When I grow up and everyone is off being teachers, or lawyers, or business ownersIm going to be a hero. Not a police officer, not a firefighter, not a doctor, but a hero. In that moment tears fill my eyes as I relive carving those words. I quietly speak to myself, I need to resurrect this and keep it with me foreverI cant believe I almost lost myself to the tests, projects, and grades from school. My dream was almost lost forever because I was told to grow up. I dust off my rock, it shines in the sunlight. I tried to keep that promise I made to myself. One night sitting in a movie theater watching a cliched superhero action packed adventure, I heard the soundtrack and not only was the music itself beautiful but the lyrics spoke to me. (My mind began to race and go through unimaginable situations in which I could save someone dear to me.) The lyrics began to embrace me like my mother comforting me after a nightmare. When you cried, Id wipe away all of your tears. When youd scream, Id fight away all of your fears. And I held your hand through all of these years- (Lee, Amy. My Immortal. Evanescence. MP3.) A spark ignited within me. Whether it was rushing into a burning building and emerging with survivors or racing to the end of the Earth and back, I wanted to brandish a cape and save someone. Exiting the theater that night I walked proudly in front of my parents with no fear of the dark abyss before us. I had no fear, only dreams of stopping any danger that may lurk in the night. It is now 2011 and Im currently seventeen years old. Im sitting here reflecting on my heroic acts from this past year. I helped my Grandmother on her difficult road to recovery from open heart surgery, rescued a puppy from a shelter, talked someone out of a bad place in his/her mind, and made my parents proud. I may not fit the mold of a comic book superhero but I believe my dream has been accomplished so far. In the future I hope to still keep that dream alive, nothing will destroy it.

Macbeth Vs. Lord Of The Flies Essays - Characters In Macbeth
Macbeth Vs. Lord Of The Flies Macbeth vs. Lord of the Flies The human being, according to evolution, has evolved from animals to become a superior animal form that has the ability to decipher right and wrong, have recognizable feelings, and at the same time have that animalistic characteristics wild beasts have. The authors of Macbeth and Lord of the Flies attempt to exhibit the idea that human beings are totally capable of acting like wild beast. The authors explain to us that different factors bring out our animal, or beast, instincts. Envy, fear, and jealousy are factors, which contribute to our regression as savages. Human beings thrive on competition, so, such factors can change the way we think. These authors use characters like Jack and Macbeth as examples of human being self corruption through letting our natural call of the wild come through. Leadership can never come in second place and is only held by the first. These characters, after realizing the idea of kill or be killed, will do anything, even acts of inhumanity, to advance and come out on top. This with the combination of other factors simply blind folds our minds into thinking that we must always come out victorious. All the values and mores that society has taught us have been wiped away simply with the illusion, internal animal characteristics, that we must strive, in any way we can, to be in the position of leadership. Physical examples like Jack killing Piggy and the slaying of Banquo by Macbeth are models of how people can be temporarily blinded by jealousy, envy, and fear. Authors, trying to prove that human beings see their own eventual downfall by using such devices as apparitions and ghost to remind us we are human. Apparitions haunted Macbeth, in the same way our conscious come into play when we know we have violated the values set up by society. This realization of doing wrong only makes some humans to more unexpected things. In a way, they become frightened of returning to human values. This is actually the beast in us that does not want to be repressed. In lord of the flies we see that this animal or if you want to call it savagery, in human beings, can be visible in even innocent children. Fear drives many of these children to act very different sometimes even aware that one would never do such things. This fear was brought on by the illusion that a stronger more dominant beast was on the island as well. Jacks animal instinct is brought out with the feeling of being second to Jack and most of the supposed beast. This is why he insists on hunting rather then working on a plan to be rescued. Jack will not tolerate being in second. Sometimes these feeling can not be pushed away and only seem to worsen. This is seen by the fact that Jack is no longer hunting to survive but for the thrill of knowing he has the power to kill that which is less then him. His animalistic characteristics only seem to get worse. Going from killing to survive, killing to know you have the power, and finally the murder of human beings. We see that Jack is now making excuses for the quick high of know he is number one and in total control. He kills Simon claiming he thought it was the beastie. Truly the fact that they dance around like savages and never stop think is prove that the beast in Jack has finally taken over his mind. The authors of Lord of the Flies and Macbeth attempt to show us that hope is not lost. Free Essays on Response To ââ¬ÅThe Story Of An Hourââ¬Å
In ââ¬Å"The Story of an Hourâ⬠by Kate Chopin, the main character Louise Mallard goes through a mandala like cycle of death and rebirth. The story starts out with Louise receiving news from a family friend that her husband Brently has died in an accident. At first, she reacts as any wife would, inconsolable by anyone, but then while she is sitting alone in her room, a change begins to happen. The change starts while she is looking out the window watching spring as it is born almost before her eyes. She begins to realize that she is no longer tied to the vows she made in marriage and can truly begin to live her life. She grows more and more excited at the endless opportunities her life now holds for her, instead of dreading a long life, she now embraces it. Louise, at this point, is reborn into a new life with endless possibilities, and she cannot wait to get started. She goes to her sister and together they triumphantly go downstairs to experience Louiseââ¬â¢s new life together. But, with every birth there is, of course, death and Louise succumbs to this when her husband returns home alive and well, having never been in the accident. She goes from feeling triumphant and free without the burden of marriage, to once again feeling trapped. Louise soon is overcome by the grief she feels over losing her second chance and dies. The story clearly shows a mandala like cycle and all the motions and feelings we experience during that process....
